Pearland ISD officials released benchmark data for its students, and saw a majority of students across each grade level pass their respective subjects.

The gist

In October and November, PISD gave benchmark exams to students in grades 3-8 on a number of subjects, as well as Algebra 1, English 1 and English 2, according to district documents.

The results showed the majority of students for each exam approached grade level, or passed, the benchmark, according to the data.

In some cases, such as eighth grade social studies, the majority of students showed mastery of the subject, according to the data.

Diving in deeper

Some grades, such as seventh grade pre-Advanced Placement math and sixth-grade pre-AP math, passed the exam more than 90% of the time, with the majority in sixth grade showing mastery, according to the data.

Spanish speakers taking math in grade three passed about 65% of the time, which was the lowest passing rate of any of the benchmark exams given. About 30% of students showed mastery on that exam, according to the data.

In eighth grade reading and language arts, about 18% of students showed mastery. That rate was similar for grade seven reading and language arts as well.

What else?

Pearland ISD’s results for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, in spring 2023 outpaced both the region and state averages. In many cases, the state also outperformed itself from the previous year.
