“Alvin ISD Serves is a way to give back to the community who gives so much to us,” Alvin ISD Superintendent Carol Nelson said.
The program originally began in response to Hurricane Harvey as a one-day community service initiative during September, but the district will expand it to one month for the first time, according to Executive Director of Communications Renae Rives.
Each campus and department will have various service projects planned for their immediate community. Planned projects include Alvin High School Performing Arts students performing for dementia patients at First Presbyterian Church and Alvin Elementary School first graders creating thank you notes for emergency responders, according to an AISD press release.
“The particular project doesn’t matter. It’s more about expressing gratitude to the community who gives us so much, and even more so, it is about instilling a heart to serve in our students,” Nelson said.
