In Pearland ISD, student enrollment has plateaued over the past five school years, and the 2022-23 enrollment projection is expected to be less than 2021-22. Meanwhile at Alvin ISD, the district anticipates growing by 1,000 additional students year over year after the pandemic, and Friendswood ISD also anticipates a return to prepandemic enrollment numbers.
Across all three school districts, teachers have seen starting salary pay increase by at least 5.58% from where starting pay was in the 2018-19 school year.
As for the overall number of teachers, each individual district saw the total teacher population follow a similar trend as its enrollment numbers.
At AISD, total teachers have increased from 1,700 teachers in 2018-19 to 1,874 heading into 2022-23. In PISD, however, the total number of teachers has decreased from 1,306 in 2018-19 to 1,300 in 2022-23. FISD has increased from 371 total teachers in 2018-19 to 390 in 2022-23.
Relating to staffing, one of the top priorities in any industry is pay. Across the three school districts in the Pearland and Friendswood area, the three superintendents made at least $208,000 during the 2021-22 school year, according to TEA data.
In PISD, Superintendent John Kelly left the district in March and was replaced by Superintendent Larry Berger, so Berger’s salary number is not included in the TEA data.
When comparing to state averages, AISD, FISD and PISD all had higher average salaries for teachers, support staff and administrative staff than the state, according to TEA data.
Specific student population trends across AISD, FISD and PISD tended to be different from those at the state level. In all districts, the population of economically disadvantaged students and English learners were below the state average.
The percentage of special education students were higher than the state average at AISD and FISD, but lower than the state average at PISD, according to TEA data.
