This story was updated at 10:53 a.m. Jan. 29 to indicate that the superintendent's term ends June 30, 2023.

At the board of trustees meeting on Jan. 21, Pearland ISD board members approved an extension of Superintendent John Kelly’s contract after the annual superintendent evaluation. The contract will now reflect the addition of the term starting July 1, 2020 until June 30, 2023.

The board also discussed and approved the list of projects identified as Level 1 priorities on the Capital Renewal Plan created during the 2018-19 school year. In October, the board approved the creation of a Capital Project fund and allocated $10 million to addressing those projects. The total cost of all Level 1 priority projects, which include facilities and grounds, maintenance and operations equipment, vehicle and bus replacements, as well as other departments, is $7.7 million.

PISD Chief Financial Officer Jorgannie Carter said it was possible that the district may be able to use bond funds to pay for some of the cost.

“There is a potential $4.3 million that can be funded through bond projects,” Carter said.

The board also approved the addition of an LED display screen for the outside of the stadium at Pearland High School.

“I’ve always had this vision where I want people to love where they live,” board member Lance Botkin said. “Something like this is adding to the value of the community.”

The screen will be added to existing construction plans for the stadium. The approved display was the mid-size option, and has an estimated cost of $525,000.
