The Pearland ISD board of trustees on Tuesday discussed capping incentive pay for teachers for the 2018-19 school year, but a final decision will come later, depending on what the budget looks like.

Teachers currently receive incentives for advanced placement and career and technical education courses, as well as for STAAR performance, but do not have caps on the amount. In one case, a teacher received over $15,000 in additional pay for teaching AP courses.

The board also voted to distribute the incentive pay for the 2017-18 school year.

“It is my opinion and maybe some of the other board that we like this program and that we want to continue with it, always subject to where our funding is,” Trustee Sean Murphy said.

The incentive plan is tied to the old accountability system, director of testing and program evaluation Ellen Akers said, so it will need revising for the upcoming year regardless.

Trustees also approved the guaranteed maximum price, or GMP, of $3.5 million for construction on portions of the Rig. The funding is part of the 2016 bond program.

The GMP includes the “noncontroversial” items from the original package, including seating on the visitor side, a new ticket booth and lighting, Superintendent John Kelly said. Improvements to the press box could come later.
