The Pearland ISD Neighborhood Forum, hosted by trustee Mike Floyd, drew a crowd of about 50 people on Thursday, March 15, at Spring Creek Barbecue, located at 9005 Broadway St. in Pearland.

The majority of attendees were parents in the district, several of whom lived in the Sunrise Lakes neighborhood in West Pearland.

Sunrise Lakes parents voiced concerns about the zoning, as half the neighborhood is currently zoned to schools east of Hwy. 35 for elementary and middle schools.

“The board hasn’t handled the Sunrise Lakes issue at all,” resident and parent Krysti Gross said. “It’s been affecting my kids, and it’s still affecting my kids.”

Other concerns included student safety and mental health, particularly the desire for younger students to have longer recesses.

The flyer for the event included the disclaimer that the views expressed were not necessarily representative of the district or board of trustees.

Parents expressed a desire for more town halls in the future.

“I think this public forum was fabulous and I think we need to see more of them, clearly. There was such a great turnout,” Pearland ISD parent Sarah May said.

The next regular Pearland ISD board meeting is April 10.
