Seven Pearland homes with severe, repetitive flood loss will undergo construction to elevate the structures above the base flood elevation level.

What’s happening?

On June 12, Pearland City Council voted 6-0 to award a $1.4 million contract for the construction to Planet Three Elevation. The money comes from the combined total of two awards of Federal Emergency Management Agency Flood Mitigation Assistance funding distributed by the Texas Water Development Board in 2022 and 2023.

The background

Hurricane Harvey had a big impact on the city, especially for residential structures that continue to be at higher risk for repetitive flooding, according to a city presentation.

While buyouts through acquisition of severe, repetitively flood-damaged properties for demolition has been a way of taking certain structures and property owners out of harm's way, raising homes well above the base flood elevation level is another, City Manager Trent Epperson said.

Notable quote

“I can’t imagine being a homeowner and hanging in limbo for this long,” Council Member Tony Carbone said. “I’m glad we finally got the funds.”

Items worth mentioning

The project is expected to be completed by December 2024, according to the contract Planet Three Elevation provided to the city.
