Accusations of mistreatment and a pending lawsuit have prompted U.S. Rep. Pete Olson, R-Pearland, to call for the closure of the Shiloh Treatment Center, a federally contracted behavioral health facility in Manvel that takes in immigrant minors.

The facility is one of dozens of providers that handles migrant children such as those separated from their parents or who are victims of trafficking, but it is unclear whether this facility has taken in any recent cases.

“Enough is enough. Since I have been in Congress, every time an issue arises concerning Shiloh’s poor care of undocumented children, Shiloh puts up a brick wall," Olson said in a statement provided to Community Impact Newspaper.

Calls for the closure also came from Olson's Democratic opponent, Sri Preston Kulkarni, last week. In 2014, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, called for the facility's closure for its "record of abuse and mistreatment" covered in news reports, according to her original statement.

An investigation by The Texas Tribune and Reveal, an outlet for the Center for Investigative Reporting, published June 20 renewed attention on the facility, which is facing a class-action lawsuit over claims of mistreatment of children. In some cases, children were held down and forcibly injected with medications, according to court documents examined by the Tribune.

“Troubling reports from Shiloh have been leaking out for years," Olson said. While I was not made aware of recent incidents until the media reported the alleged abuses, the details outlined in the lawsuit are very disturbing."

Olson said he recommends the facility be closed immediately and that children be relocated to another facility until the accusations can be addressed.

“I have been in contact with local and state officials and stand ready to work with them to develop a safe resolution to protect these children," he said. "Regardless of where they come from, no child should be placed in physical danger."
