Pearland officials received the go-ahead from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on Thursday night to rescind the boil water notice that affected the Shadow Creek area. As of 11:03 p.m., the water was deemed safe. Pearland officials initially said a major equipment failure at its Kirby Water Production Facility brought the potable water pressure below safe levels, but it was later determined that the fault there was actually triggered by a malfunction at the city's FM 521 facility. Freezing weather was not a direct cause, city spokesperson Sparkle Anderson said, but officials did register a higher than normal volume of usage leading up to the fault, possibly due to more people staying home and using water once the freeze was over. The Kirby plant had increased its production to make up for the loss in pressure until it also broke down, but officials did not know there was a problem at the FM 521 facility because a monitoring system failed to alert anyone to the issue. Water production is now at normal levels, but samples taken overnight must be cleared by the TCEQ before the city can lift the notice.
