The city of Pearland appointed John McDonald to serve as director of community development starting July 10.

McDonald will succeed Lata Krishnarao, who announced her retirement from the city on June 26 after four years as the community development director and 10 years as the planning director.

“During his career, John has gained experience in a large, complex and sophisticated community and organization. He knows the big picture and all aspects of municipal operations,” Pearland city manager Clay Pearson said in a statement. “I’m confident that John will be a outstanding leader for the Community Development Department joining our group of existing professionals dedicated to quality development that’s safe and adds long-term value.”

In his new role, McDonald will oversee the city's planning department, which includes zoning, land use planning, permitting and inspections as well as coordinating the the Pearland Economic Development Corporation to implement the city's vision through the Pearland 20/20 Community Strategic Plan and the city's comprehensive plan.

McDonald previously served as a senior planner in San Antonio and director of community development in Dickinson. Most recently, he served as the director of development services for the city of Bellaire, which he held for nearly nine years prior to his hire at the city of Pearland.

McDonald received his bachelor's in history at Tarleton University and a master's in public administration at Southwest Texas State University.
