When Amina Arif Hutchinson took over Pilates Powerhouse in February 2023, her main objective was continuing the legacy of previous owners, Bonnie and Matt Ney.

“They wanted to leave it with somebody they knew would carry on the business and create community,” Hutchinson said. “So that's what's important to me—community, family, wellness and safety.”

Hutchinson wants the studio to be a “one-stop shop” for health, recovery and self care, she said.

Since February, she has renovated spaces and expanded services at the wellness center in Pearland to include an esthetician who does facials and beauty services. She’s added more equipment in the gym for personal training, and created an area for private Pilates sessions.

The center also offers massage services and stretch sessions, and has a small shop for branded clothing and fitness merchandise.

Diving in deeper

Guests must travel a long and thin gravel road to get into Pilates Powerhouse, located at a converted home sitting on five acres of land.

Hutchinson said this helps guests slow down and get in the mindset of self care.

“When you drive down our gravel road, I think you immediately get in that mindset of reset,” she said. “Whether it's recovery, wellness or self, you approach the building like you're getting ready.”

Why it matters

Pilates Powerhouse stayed open through the renovations and ownership change to cater to its members—who range from 13 years old to 96 years old, Hutchinson said.

“Our veterans in the studio are very committed,” she said. “They do not want to miss their workouts.”

These members’ dedication to an active lifestyle, despite physical ailments or age, is inspiring to Hutchinson, she said.

“I strongly believe that’s the community we’re building,” she said. “People who are set on building bodies for life.”
