The best part of Greg and Earlene Landwehr’s job is selling furniture they know is high-quality, they said.

“We not only back our product 100 percent, the builders do also,” Greg said.

The couple opened E&G Amish Furniture in 2004. They moved from their original storefront in Clear Lake to Baybrook Mall in Friendswood in 2010.

The interest in Amish furniture, which is crafted entirely from wood without the use modern electric machines, particle boards or laminate, came from Greg’s mother, who has sold it for over 20 years, Greg said.

While neither Greg nor Earlene knew anything about furniture when they first began the business, they learned as they went along.

“It took a lot because we weren’t furniture people,” Greg said. “That took a long time.”

The couple now knows the ins and outs of furniture, stain and style, but prior jobs had already taught them customer service—the most important part of having a successful business, Earlene said.

“Customer service is the No. 1 priority,” she said.

The Landwehrs opened a second location in Sugar Land in 2009. The couple runs both stores with the help of their three children. They have other relatives who help whenever they can as well, Earlene said.

“We kind of want to help everybody who wants to be a part of us,” Earlene said.

Over the years, more people have come to appreciate the quality of Amish furniture, Greg said.

“You can’t beat it. Makes it easy to sell that way,” Greg said.

However, people still have misconceptions about the Amish approach, he said.

“A lot of people have misconceptions on the style of it because they automatically think Amish is country or shaker or simple furniture. But they are getting into all aspects of the different styles,” Greg said.
