Final Election Day round up: Pearland ISD bond passes, Pearland liquor law overturned with double-digit margins

Voters casted their ballots with overwhelming support for two nonpartisan referenda. The $220 million Pearland Independent School District bond election passed with 61.95 percent of the vote, or 22,484 votes. The local option election, which will loosen alcohol restrictions, passed by 66.24 percent of the vote, or 24,300 votes. Published Nov. 9

Pearland voters could overturn city liquor restrictions on Election Day

A private consulting firm successfully petitioned the city for a local option election to be placed on the Nov. 8 ballot. The ballot measure allows businesses to sell alcohol for off-premises consumption only. Pearland strictly regulates the sale of alcohol, only allowing businesses that acquired a food and beverage license from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to sell mixed beverages—liquor, beer and wine. Liquor stores were forced to take up shop just outside city limits.

Dick's Sporting Goods to open 10 Houston locations

The stores are the Houston area’s first Dick’s Sporting Goods locations and will be at First Colony Mall in Sugar Land, Baybrook Mall in Friendswood,The Shoppes at Parkwest in Katy, Deerbrook Mall in Humble, Willowbrook Mall in Willowbrook and Woodlands Mall in The Woodlands. Among the 10 locations are two Field & Stream stores and two Golf Galaxy stores, which are specialty shops owned by Dick’s Sporting Goods that supply hunting and golf apparel and goods, respectively. Both the Katy and Baybrook stores will have a Dick’s Sporting Goods, Field & Stream and Golf Galaxy in the same location. Published Oct. 11

Final early voting numbers hit record highs in Brazoria, Galveston counties

In Brazoria County, more than 50 percent of registered voters cast their ballots before election day. A total of 101,295 ballots were submitted either by mail or at a polling place. There are 196,505 registered voters in the county. Similar numbers were tallied in Galveston County, where 101,488 of 208,228 registered voters cast a ballot by mail or in person. Published Oct. 25

The Center at Pearland Parkway II inks anchor tenant 

Academy Sports + Outdoors will anchor The Center at Pearland Parkway II, a 108,343-square-foot expansion to the shopping center that opened in fall 2014. Stream Realty Partners broke ground on the addition March 5 at the northwest intersection of FM 518 and Pearland Parkway. Along with the nearly 63,000-square-foot Academy, the first Phase 2 tenants are expected to open in fall.
