For Curt Olmstead, he said he remembers the sunsets more than anything.

“We’d be out landscaping and I’d see the sunset and the horizon,” he said.

It was this inspiration he said Horizon Outdoor Construction came from.

The backstory

Since 1985, Horizon Outdoor Construction has built custom pools and outdoor living spaces for homeowners across southeast Texas.

Today, Horizon designs and builds pools, hot tubs, patio covers, outdoor kitchens, backyard bathrooms and fireplaces, among other home upgrades. The company also handles remodeling projects for customers looking to refresh existing spaces.

His daughter, Lauren Olmstead, who has worked with the company for 14 years, manages all new construction.

“I love seeing the transformation,” she said. “It gets worse before it gets better, but in the end it’s so fun seeing pictures of the families enjoying it—whether it’s little kids in goggles or a dog on the tanning ledge.”

Many of Horizon’s subcontractors have been part of the team for over a decade, Olmstead said. Before working on customer projects, new hires complete trial work at the company's office to ensure they meet Horizon standards.

Customers can stop by the company’s Pearland showroom to see display pools and browse materials. Horizon builds year-round but stays busiest in spring and summer, and often helps families plan builds ahead of birthdays, Olmstead said.

Quote of note

For the Horizon team, they said each build is more than a project, Olmstead said.

“These are things families have saved their whole lives for,” Olmstead said. “ They’ve worked so hard to be able to afford this type of expense, and we really respect that. We treat it like the investment that it is.”
