Following a debate on whether or not to appoint Mayor Quentin Wiltz as the city's primary representative for the Houston-Galveston Area Council, or H-GAC, Pearland City Council unanimously voted to postpone the vote to appoint a new member to the H-GAC boards at its June 22 meeting.
What happened
When Former Mayor Kevin Cole's term ended in May, his primary seats on three different H-GAC boards became vacant. According to H-GAC bylaws, the city can either allow the named alternates to serve in the primary member's absence and name new alternates, or council can confirm an entirely new slate for the remainder of the unexpired term.
The discussion
Following several public comments in support of appointing Wiltz to fill the vacant seats, Wiltz noted a 20-plus-year precedent of Pearland mayors holding these primary representative seats.
"I'm not asking for anything more as the mayor of this city duly elected, but I'm definitely not asking for anything less in order for me to fulfill the role and the job that the people have elected me to do," Wiltz said at the meeting.
Council member Rushi Patel pushed back against appointing Wiltz, citing concerns over the newly elected mayor's lack of experience.
"Mayor Cole was elected by this council because it was the easiest decision because of his experience and knowledge of this city,” Patel said at the meeting. “I understand Mayor Wiltz wants the same privilege and he should, but I think it is time that needs to be proven of what [he] can do for this community.”
What’s next
Patel made the motion to postpone the vote to October. During the discussion, council member Clint Byrom supported the adjusted timeline, noting that H-GAC appointments are traditionally made in October to align with H-GAC’s operating year.
City Council will reconsider the item at its Oct. 26 meeting.
