What happened
Pearland City Council voted unanimously at its July 14 meeting to award a $2.8 million construction contract to Underground Construction Solutions to replace 6.4 miles of aging transit water lines.
The impact
The project will replace existing transit pipes, which are 35-50 years old, to improve water flow and pressure and eliminate dead-end lines. All fire hydrants in the area will be upgraded too.
The construction is scheduled to begin in August and is expected to be completed by May 2027, according to the agenda documents.
Construction that affects traffic will be limited to weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no weekend or holiday water shutoffs.
By the numbers
The winning bid came in 51% below the engineer’s estimate of $5.74M, largely due to lower unit prices for 6" and 8" waterlines amid a softened local construction market, according to agenda documents.
