The Manvel Police Department is requesting over $2 million worth of new equipment and personnel in its budget for fiscal year 2025-2026.

What you need to know

In a budget request presented at Manvel City Council’s June 16 meeting, officials with Manvel police cite increases in a variety of areas, including in reports filed, arrest and DWIs as reasons for their request.
  • Reports filed are up 24% from 2024
  • Arrests are up 36% from 2024
  • DWI arrests are up 44% since 2021
Assistant Chief Rick Alvarado said the department has its goal set for the year, including adding the necessary support personnel to the department, reducing crime in high-profile areas and reducing traffic accidents.

By the numbers

The budget request presented June 16 is separated into seven sections: patrol, special response team, community relations, training, criminal investigation department and personnel, according to city documents.

Diving in deeper

The priciest request comes from added personnel—totaling 16—to keep up with the city’s growth.

Some of the positions being requested include:
  • 4 patrol officers
  • 4 jail staff
  • 1 evidence/forensic technician
  • 1 records manager and clerk
  • 1 custodian
  • 1 jail supervisor
Along with the increased personnel, Alavardo said the department is also requesting additional equipment.

Some examples include:
  • 3 new and replacement patrol units
  • 36 ballistic helmets
  • A small radar trailer
  • 8 portable radios
  • 10 gas masks
  • 2 Body armor
  • 10 Glock 44 Pistols
The criminal investigation department requested 32 different items all varying in quantity, which Alvarado said would help the department stay “ahead of the curve.”

Among the 32 items are:
  • DNA collection kit
  • Fluorescent fingerprint powder
  • A laptop
  • Gunpowder particle test kit
  • Cell phone case
  • All-weather pen
Quote of note

“What stands out most to me is the focus on officer recruitment, retention, and equipping our department with the tools they need to keep Manvel safe,” Mayor Dan Davis said. “I’m committed to supporting our law enforcement and ensuring they have the resources necessary to serve our residents effectively.”

Also of note

Manvel Police Department is getting set to move into a new facility in July that officials say will increase their capacity and room, Community Impact previously reported.

The space will total more than 45,000 square feet and all told will cost around $24 million to build out, Police Chief Keith Traylor said.

Currently, the police department has 51 staff members, including patrol, investigators, dispatch and administration, Traylor said.
