The UFCU Pearland branch is supporting local students by donating $20,000 to eliminate and reduce school lunch debt for Pearland ISD and Alvin ISD.

What you need to know

The donation includes $10,000 for each district and will be used to pay off outstanding school meal balances with the intention to ease financial stress during the holiday season, district officials said.

“Not everybody knows how to ask for help. Not everybody knows where to find help, and this is help coming to them,” said Sundie Dahlkamp, PISD’s assistant superintendent of talent and engagement.

The announcement was made Dec. 18 at UFCU’s Pearland branch, which opened in November.

“We’re honored to partner with Pearland ISD and Alvin ISD and look forward to building lasting relationships across Greater Houston as we continue to grow,” UFCU President and CEO Michael Crowl said.

Why now?

Studies consistently show that a reliable midday meal improves student attendance, behavior and academic performance, according to a UFCU news release.

The donation will benefit two school districts that collectively serve more than 50,000 students and their families.

“This donation means the world to our students, our families and our community, and we truly appreciate UFCU’s commitment to making sure our kids are taken care of,” said Renae Rives, Alvin ISD’s chief of communication.
