Pearland ISD’s board of trustees approved at its May 13 meeting an emergency procurement to address elevators and fire alarm systems that are in need of upgrades at various facilities within the district.

The overview

Vital components of elevators and fire alarm systems at various district facilities have been discontinued by the manufacturer, making repairs impossible, according to district agenda documents.

Since the systems are no longer reliably serviceable, PISD administration recommended trustees to execute an emergency procurement to address the immediate safety and operational concerns the elevators and fire alarm systems pose.

“The reason we’re asking for [an emergency procurement] is due to the timeline and need to get these things done during the summer months, and if we go through the formal process of procurement we will miss that window,” Superintendent Larry Berger said at the meeting.

The cost

Trustees approved nearly $265,000 for elevator modernizations at the following facilities:
  • Dawson High School: $86,500
  • Pearland High School stadium: $91,900
  • Searcy building at PHS: $86,400
Trustees also approved fire alarm system upgrades for $250,000 at the following facilities:
  • Rogers Middle School: $156,000
  • PACE Center: $79,000
  • Pearland Junior High West weight room: $15,000
Looking ahead

Berger also noted that fire alarm systems can only be replaced during the summer when campuses are vacant, as it poses a safety concern during the school year.

Both the elevators and fire alarm systems will be addressed over the summer.
