Trustees will also consider an emergency procurement for elevators and fire alarms at multiple campuses at the meeting, district agenda documents note.
The overview
At its April 8 meeting, PISD projected an $8.6 million shortfall for fiscal year 2025-26, Community Impact previously reported.
However, this potential shortfall is based on current law, officials said, meaning the current funding available at the state level stays the same throughout the remainder of the legislative session.
In a statement written to Community Impact May 5, PISD noted that there has not been a change on public school funding or teacher compensation for the 2025-26 school year from the state.
“...The House and Senate have not agreed on public school funding or teacher compensation, and this poses an issue for the 2025-26 school year as we need the increase to basic allotment and adjustments for teacher pay raises,” PISD’s statement read.
As of its April 8 meeting, the district is projecting nearly $211 million in revenue and $2 million in savings, which—paired with $221.6 million in expenses—results in a shortfall of over $8.6 million for FY 2025-26, according to district documents.
The shortfall also includes a 2% general pay increase with adjustments.
Also on the agenda
Vital components of elevators and fire alarm systems at various district facilities have been discontinued by the manufacturer, making repairs impossible, district documents note.
Since the systems are no longer reliably serviceable, administration is recommending trustees execute an emergency procurement to address the immediate safety and operational concerns the elevators and fire alarm systems pose.
The trustees will consider nearly $265,000 for elevator modernizations at the following facilities:
- Dawson High School: $86,500
- Pearland High School stadium: $91,900
- Searcy building at PHS: $86,400
- Rogers Middle School: $156,000
- PACE Center: $79,000
- Pearland Junior High West weight room: $15,000
The board will also consider using nearly $4 million from the district’s capital renewal fund for priority projects within the capital renewal plan, or CRP.
The current CRP fund has $5.7 million, and the district is planning to transfer 50% of any yearly surplus to the CRP fund, district documents note.Stay tuned
