Whether it’s providing pest control services to the Houston Zoo or a Pearland home, management with Killum Pest Control said they treat every property with the same level of protection and respect.
For Eric Melass, Killum’s vice president of operations, it’s about evolving to meet the needs of Pearland residents for years to come.
“We're always evolving,” Melass said. “When I started 30 years ago all we really did was insects, and had a quarterly pest control service. Now we do everything. Our services encompass every insect that you could think of related to structural insects.”
The history
Originally owned by Gerald Kellum, the pest control company was named Kellum Pest Patrol before current owner L.E. “Corky” Melass purchased it in 1973.
From there, the company branched out from Lake Jackson to Pearland in 1998 with headquarters remaining in Lake Jackson and another service center in Pearland.
What they offer
For residential spaces, Killum provides basic treatment that will warranty roaches, ants and silverfish. They also treat the immediate perimeter and inside of the structure/home including the attic, where accessible.
Killum also provides services for retail facilities, restaurants, hotels, manufacturing and food processing plants, along with schools and warehouses, among other facilities.
Services can be provided one time, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly and semiannually.
For Pearland homeowners, the biggest mistake is waiting until they see termites, Eric Melass said.
“People think that because their home is made of brick or hardy, termites can’t touch it, but the entire bones of the house are made of wood, and it costs more to cure the problem than it does prevention,” Eric Melass said.
Going forward
After nearly three decades of serving the community, Eric Melass said Killum will continue to treat customers with urgency and security to better serve the Pearland community.
“Your house is a sanctuary, and you don't just want anybody to come into it,” he said. “We want people to be comfortable with our employees, make sure that we can always listen and that we answer questions and then be able to provide the results.”
