Tropical Storm Nate will quickly move northwest into the Gulf this weekend, possibly making landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast as a hurricane.

Hurricane hunters will fly a special mission to better sample the steering currents today, which should provide more confidence in the track forecast. ABC13 Meteorologist Travis Herzog said uncertainty is always high with developing tropical systems, so stay tuned.

Before Nate reaches the Gulf coast, a tropical low now near Florida will blow into Southeast Texas this weekend. Herzog said this will bring in deeper tropical moisture, and there is now a slight chance of afternoon downpours Saturday and Sunday.

Our hurricane season typically ends by mid-October as the strong upper level winds that push down cold fronts also shove storms away from Texas. Herzog said of the handful of past storms affecting Texas in October, most of them formed in the southwest Gulf. Typically at this time of year, storms that lift north through the Caribbean either keep moving north or turn east toward Florida.
