Ask the Managing editorAre the voting records of candidates and elected officials public information?

Candidates campaigning to win seats on Katy City Council and the Katy ISD school board May 6 have decorated the town with colorful signs seeking support. In this month’s edition, we have compiled a guide on Page 25 documenting local candidates’ top priorities in office. We have also included Q&As and a list of polling locations where you can cast your vote.

During an election, constituents may be curious about a candidate’s voting record. As it happens, all voting records are public information and can be requested through a county’s election office. While voting records will not show who or what a person voted for—that has always been private—it will show whether a person voted in an election.

There is a wealth of information available from county election offices—from voting records to individual precinct results. Visit the election websites of Harris, Fort Bend or Waller counties for information, and view election results on our website May 6.
