On Jan. 24, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, who lives in Spring, was named the United States Sports Academy’s 2016 Female Athlete of the Year, along with Michael Phelps, who won Male Athlete of the Year.

"It's a great honor to receive this award from 'America's Sports University,'” Biles said. "It’s very humbling considering USSA’s rich history in sports and education.”

Biles won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro. She won a gold medal with Team USA in the women’s team all-around and won individual gold medals in the women’s individual all-around, women’s vault and the women’s floor exercise; she won a bronze medal in women’s beam.

Since the Olympics, Biles said she has been traveling, making appearances, and spending time with her friends and family. She also completed a book tour for her autobiography, Courage to Soar. 

"I’ve been so lucky since the Olympics and have been able to travel all over the place and take part in so many amazing events,” she said.

Mostly, she said she is enjoying relaxing before she heads to Hawaii this summer for a family vacation. After that she will get back into the gym.

"When I'm in home Spring, I spend a lot of my time at World Champions Centre, which is the gym where I train and is owned by my family,” she said. "It’s a great place for me to go just to relax and have fun. I can get back on the equipment, play around and think about training again.”
