The 12.5-mile trailhead at Dennis Johnston Park remains closed indefinitely while crews work to repair the parts of the trail damaged by flooding in April and May. The trail is closed from Carter Park to Jesse Jones Park, officials said.
Mike Howlett, special projects coordinator for Harris County Precinct 4 parks, said parts of the trail have to be rebuilt using machines.
“The difficulty is that the lay-down machine that puts the asphalt down broke a line, and we’re not quite sure when the trail will be done at this time,” he said.
Howlett said the trail was supposed to reopen July 15. If the repair to the machine can be fixed by Precinct 4 crew, the trail will open sooner than if the repairs need to be contracted out.
“If the machine has to go back to the manufacture, then we don’t know what the timeline will be,” he said.
A blown pipe, which crosses the trail between Dennis Johnston Park and Pundt Park, has sunk part of the trail.
"We will open other sections of the trail as they are fixed, but Dennis Johnston to Pundt will be a while longer," Howlett said.
Part of the greenway trail is open, however, from Pundt Park to Carter Park.
The address to access the trail from Pundt Park is 4129 Spring Creek Drive. The address to access the trail at Carter Park is 7221 Treaschwig Road.
