Updated March 2 at 9:45 a.m.  With all of the precincts reporting, Joy Dawson-Thomas has won the Democratic primary election for state representative District 126 over opponent Cris Hernandez. Dawson-Thomas garnered 3,366 votes, or 60.74 percent, while Hernandez received 2,176 votes, or 39.26 percent of the voting totals.

“I think that the voters like that I was an educator and that I worked in the Legislature," Dawson-Thomas said.

A Spring-area native, Dawson-Thomas served as a police officer for the Spring ISD. She is now a business owner and college professor. Dawson-Thomas will face Republican opponent Kevin Roberts in the general election in November. The general election victor will take over for Rep. Patricia Harless, R-Spring, who has held the position since 2007 and opted not to run for re-election. Dawson-Thomas' campaign against Kevin Roberts will rely on an informed perspective, she said.

"I’m determined," Dawson-Thomas said. "I am in a predominantly Republican district, and we are a grassroots campaign."

All results are unofficial until canvassed.
