The Riva Row Boat House on The Woodlands Waterway is expanding its operations and program offerings for the spring season. New programs include stand-up paddle boarding classes, Sunday kayak excursions and kayaking with picnic lunches.

"We're always looking to expand the use of our facilities, and when we have a lot of people using the boat house, we still want to offer quality programs to residents as an extension of the [boat house] program," said Chris Nunes, director of parks and recreation for The Woodlands Township.

Previously, Riva Row Boat House only offered kayaking Monday through Saturday, but is now offering 90-minute Sunday excursions. The excursions are led by an American Canoe Association-certified instructor. The program is designed to teach kayakers new kayaking techniques while exploring nature, according to The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau. The 90-minute excursions are $40 for a solo kayak and $55 for a tandem kayak. They are scheduled for April 12, April 26, May 3 and May 17 at 10 a.m.

On Saturdays, couples can sign up for kayak excursions along the Waterway and Lake Woodlands that include a picnic lunch. The program is $60 for a two-hour tandem kayak rental on Lake Woodlands that includes a picnic lunch on the lake.

"It's a great kind of date night program," Nunes said.

The boat house coordinates with a local restaurant to provide a lunch to kayakers who often stop at North Shore Park, South Shore Park or The Cove on the shores of Lake Woodlands to enjoy their lunch, Nunes said.

Riva Row Boat House will introduce introductory classes for stand up paddle boarding. The classes teach students the proper stance while paddle boarding as well as paddling and turning techniques. Stand up paddle boarding classes are offered April 11, April 25, May 9 and May 23 from 10-11 a.m.
