Big decisions made in 2013

Comprehensive plan

The City of Magnolia adopted a new 20-30-year comprehensive plan for growth and development called "Magnolia on the Move."

Annexation

Annexation of new property into city limits helped annual revenue increase for fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2013 to $2.2 million, up from $2.15 million the previous fiscal year.

Sales tax revenue increases, deficit eliminated

Sales tax revenue for fiscal year 2012-13 was up $992,000 from $900,000 the year before because of increased population and business growth. In addition, the city's almost $600,000 deficit in the general fund since 2010 has been eliminated.

Sixth Street repaving and extension

Magnolia completed a $112,000 project to re-pave and extend Sixth Street through to Unity Park Drive. This project was identified by the city as a critical step in developing the downtown area.

Top issues for 2014

Town Center, city growth

Tractor Supply opened in the new Town Center last year, which is expected to be a catalyst for additional businesses to move to the area. Outlook for growth for the city is strong, said Mayor Todd Kana. The city is in talks with developers and is still seeing a steady increase in permits being issued as well, he said.

Road construction

Continuation of the road construction project expanding FM 1774 is a top priority for mobility and growth for the region.

Parking improvements

Improving parking in the downtown area on FM 1774 is a top priority. The Magnolia Downtown Association, which represents the interest of business owners, is working with the city to improve parking.

Expansion of water facilities

Magnolia's biggest issue coming in 2014 is the expansion of our water and waste water facilities in anticipation of population and business growth, mainly the waste water facility, Kana said.
