Precincts 3 and 4 in Harris County have embarked on a project to widen Grant Road from Spring Cypress Road to Lakewood Forest Drive. The project will take the two-lane road and turn it into a four-lane concrete boulevard with a 14-foot median.
The Precinct 3 commissioners office will tackle the portion of the road from Lakewood Forest Drive to Old Kluge Road. The project is in the design phase with right-of-way acquisition still to be completed.
Precinct 4 is in charge of the piece of Grant Road from Old Kluge Road to Spring Cypress Road, which has been broken up into two sub-projects. Project design has been carried out for a roughly 1,100-foot portion of the road from Old Kluge Road to Malcomson Road.
"The project design is complete and is ready for bidding purposes once a right of way dedication within Precinct 3's section is finalized," said Pamela Rocchi, capital improvement projects coordinator with Precinct 4.
The precinct began the study phase for the second part of the project—which covers the 1.6 miles of Grant Road from Malcomson Road to Spring Cypress Road—July 9. Project development will take approximately 24–30 months, Rocchi said. The goal is to start construction in the first quarter of 2015.
Other project improvements include the development of a storm sewer system and traffic signalization where necessary. The corridor is reaching a capacity threshold, which presents safety concerns, Rocchi said. The road project is meant to address increasing volumes of traffic along the corridor, which is expected to become even busier once the Grand Parkway is built.
