Loss is a part of life—whether it's the loss of a loved one, a sense of direction or a childhood dream—and local artist Cathie Kayser shows this through her printed works of art that make up "A Thread Runs Through," a compilation of new and recycled etchings, monotype and prints on display at Lone Star College–CyFair.
Kayser began gathering materials and inspiration for her current exhibition pieces about eight years ago when her father passed away.
"Before my father died, my work was non-objective," she said. "The pieces were more about color and composition, the formal elements of art."
Shortly after her father's death, a blue jay flew into Kayser's kitchen window and broke its neck. A few weeks later, Kayser saw the remains of the bird in her flower bed and began to sketch.
"These sketches became the basis for several etchings and lithographs, and a body of work began to develop," she said. "My work became about loss."
A long-time Houston resident, Kayser worked as a graphic designer for more than 20 years. Leading up to her career in art, Kayser took several classes at the Glassell School of Art and has held art exhibitions throughout the state over the past decade.
"I was taught every printmaking method except screen printing," Kayser said. "I worked almost exclusively with copper etching and lithography. My love of printmaking probably has something to do with all my years as a designer: it involves paper and ink."
As she has continued to explore new styles and methods of art, Kayser said she found a passion for prints and has expanded her range to include lithography, relief, etching and monotype. Kayser said she has combined some of her old pieces with her new works to create new and unique elements.
"I have painted, but it doesn't satisfy me," Kayser said. "What I love about printmaking is the transparency of the inks and how they allow the layering of information. With printmaking, I can get the rich blacks of charcoal without the messy dust."
The exhibition is held in conjunction with PrintHouston—a citywide celebration of local arts of which Kayser is a founding member. About 16 of Kayer's works are on display and are all for sale by the artist. Kayser's work will be featured at LSC–CyFair's Bosque Gallery through July 23. Kayser's full body of work can be viewed and purchased at www.cathiekayser.weebly.com.
