There are many family-friendly activities for those wanting to spend time outdoors this summer in Magnolia and Tomball's farms and gardens.

Matt Family Orchard

Juicy blackberries and sweet figs are ripe for picking at Matt Family Orchard in Tomball. The 35-acre orchard offers the public a chance to pick fruit from its crop on Mondays, Wednesday and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Blackberries are $3.75 a pound and figs are $4.25 a pound.

"Blackberries are still coming in strong," said owner Rick Matt, who runs the orchard. "They're delicious; they are big and plump and they're full of juice."

Matt said he anticipates the blackberries to be pickable for another two or three weeks. However, fig season has just begun, he said.

"We're having a good season with the figs," Matt said. "We have six different varieties. We only started picking them last week. They haven't reached their peak yet."

The orchard also sells honey made from its 80 beehives.

"The honey is pure, with nothing added," Matt said.
