The Cypress Historical Society celebrated the history of the community June 14 with the dedication of the area's first historical marker.

Statewide figures—including state Rep. Alan Fletcher, R-Tomball—attended the dedication ceremony to declare the historical site.

"Cypress has been here for a long time and has been an important part of the development of this part of the state of Texas," said Jane Ledbetter, Cypress Historical Society board member. "We felt that it should have recognition for its part in that development, and that was our aim for applying for a marker."

In conjunction with the Harris County Historical Commission, historical society President Karen McGilvery and Vice President Donna McCarty composed an application highlighting Cypress' timeline. Ledbetter said compiling the application information took close to a year to complete with different facets to consider.

History of the rural communities of Big Cypress, Hamblin, Eden, Cypress Grove, Cypress Top and Cypress City from German immigrants and settlers seeking religious freedom was included in the application. Hot Wells Shooting Range's antiquity as a sanitarium and hotel was featured the development of the Cypress business community.

Following a presentation from Rep. Fletcher, ceremonial citations from Gov. Rick Perry signified the dedication of the marker. A reception and tours of the historical buildings in the park at 26026 Hwy. 290 followed the unveiling and dedication of the marker.
