Motorists can expect delays on southbound Beltway 8 main lanes and frontage road as the section between Clay Road and Memorial Drive will be closed to traffic from 10 p.m. April 6 through 5 a.m. April 8 to allow for striping improvements and construction of a dedicated exit lane at Westview.

Southbound traffic will be required to exit the beltway after Tanner Road. The work is expected to improve mobility in the area and provide more options for merging traffic movements, said Patti Evans with HCTRA.

"There is also a total closure—northbound and southbound—scheduled for the following weekend of April 13 in the same area," Evans said. "Work scheduled for this weekend and next wraps up a year-long project of the West Sam Houston Tollway."

According to HCTRA, the overall scope of the project reconstructed Clay and Hammerly exit and entrance ramps to eliminate narrow lanes and improve traffic flow, widened four ramps to be reconfigured with dedicated EZ Tag lanes, improved pavement markings, and added a new safety shoulder southbound near Hammerly and new north and southbound axillary lanes.

The estimated $9.9 million project was put to bid January 2012 and awarded to Texas Sterling Construction. The closure is subject to change due to weather conditions or other events. For more information, other closures or current updates, visit www.houstontranstar.org.
