Infamous for its beer gardens and acclaimed menus, Austin-based entertainment venue Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has expanded its brand to Vintage Park and plans to open Feb. 14.
With its other Houston location off South Mason Road in Katy, Drafthouse sets itself apart from traditional cinemas by featuring independent films, stage performances and celebrity appearances for special events. Its patio beer garden offers a variety of brews, including Texas and local brands, for adult patrons.
Although its eat-and-watch model is similar to other establishments with food menus, drafthouse's ordering system differs in that guests write their order on a piece of paper, and then they place it on a holder at their eating space until a water picks it up. The result is less distractions and more accurate results.
A special soft opening weekend, Feb. 10–13. will allow guests to pay discounted prices, $3 per ticket, and view flicks such as Skyfall, Argo, and oldies such as Ghostbusters and Jaws.
Nestled into Vintage Park's array of shops, it makes for a perfect date-night or family night out destination. However, persons under the age 18 are not permitted entry unless accompanied by an adult. Theater officials say this is to preserve an "adult-friendly atmosphere," but that during the week there are special screenings with brighter lighting for mothers with young children.
Another feature the theater has made itself known for is its custom pre-shows during films. For instance, a comedy featuring Will Ferrell would offer an hour-long pre show of previous Ferrell films and trivia. It gives guests something to look forward to while waiting for their movie to start instead of generic celebrity trivia present in most mainstream theaters.
With several theater sizes, the theater can also host group parties and work functions. Individuals can bring any DVD they would like to screen, whether it is a work-related slideshow, home video or favorite movie, and rent out a theater for the afternoon.
Drafthouse's efforts are aimed at it becoming a "home for movie lovers," and a hot spot for community gatherings.
Tickets are on sale now for the soft opening shows at www.drafthouse.com/houston/vintage_park.
