The 29th annual Magnolia ISD Livestock Show kicks off Sept. 21 as more than 200 students from third to 12th grade compete with their prized animals in hopes of securing a scholarship, honor or chance to enter the auction.

The event, which runs Sept. 21-22, includes an array of shows including hog, turkey, goat, lamb and steer.

This year marks Magnolia High School senior Cherri Donahue's final and fourth year participating in the event. Her last show animal is a heifer that Donahue hopes will impress the judges.

"You have to feed [the animals] twice a day, work with them constantly, water them, and you have to build a relationship with the animal and teach them what they have to do in the ring," she said.

The steer and heifer shows are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 21, and the morning also includes the turkey, broiler, rabbit and baked goods shows.

Students are allowed to enter multiple shows, but they are only allotted one animal or entry per show. Last year, the auction raised about $225,000 for the students, said Magnolia High School Future Farmers of America teacher Brandi Smith, and all participants are voluntarily competing because the show is not a requirement of FFA.

Although participation is voluntary, nine-year show veteran and MHS senior Rikette Hurst said it has taught her responsibility and leadership skills.

"I think it's fun and it keeps me going," she said. "Anyone who can be involved, should."

The Magnolia ISD Livestock Show is hosted at the Magnolia High School Agriculture Barn, 14350 FM 1488. For more information on the show and a schedule of events, visit magnolia.ffanow.org.
