Performing Arts Center draws crowd

The new 30,000-square-foot Performing Arts Center at Lone Star College–Tomball allows the school to put on productions it has never been able to before, according to theater director Sherri Ryan White.

"It's an amazing theater," she said. "You can do so much more with all the space and the lighting and sound technology."

The Center, which opened in August 2011, features dressing and costuming rooms, scene building rooms, a box office and concession stand and a full orchestral pit. It seats 425 people and the stage itself is bigger than the school's 52-by-52-foot black box theater, where all previous productions were performed. Along with performances, the theater has allowed the college to introduce classes in theater technology, costuming and makeup.

The funding for the project came from a bond referendum passed in May 2008, granting the school $45 million for construction projects. The Performing Arts Center cost $12.2 million.

The drama department used the new theater for its performances of Neil Simon's "Rumors" in October and Arthur Miller's "All My Sons" in February.
