Lone Star College-CyFair will host a Discovery College job fair Saturday, April 14 for those interested in teaching courses in the summer youth program held June 4 through Aug. 2.

With the theme of "Learning is Fun," LSC-CyFair's Discovery College is meant to be entertaining and educational, providing children an opportunity to develop skills and learn new ones in a friendly environment.

The Discovery College summer youth program seeks highly-qualified, engaging and innovative instructors to teach courses in science, technology, engineering, math and the arts, said Kenya White, director of continuing education.

Some academic courses include robotics, project runway, top model, AutoCAD, math genius and extreme songwriting.

The program needs certified teachers or practitioners in the field they are applying for.

"Not all instructors have to have a degree to teach," White said. "For instance, for our program called top model, we want to make sure that the teacher has a background in cosmetology because the students will be learning things about hair and makeup. They may not be qualified to teach cosmetology in school, but they have a cosmetology license."

Instructors will get the chance to offer out of the box lessons.

"The teachers will be able to do a lot of technical things that they do in school but make it fun," White said. "They will be able to teach their lessons in such a way that kids can grasp it. It is like an introduction to the workforce."

LSC-CyFair offers Discovery College for ages 9 to 17 as half-day sessions from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and are held at the Barker Cypress campus. The salary for instructors is $26 per hour.

Each course has been designed with versatility in mind, White said.

"If a kid takes a theater class, they will learn more than just theater," She said. "They are going to get to know about dancing and singing. All of this will shape what they are currently doing and match their career path."

The job fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the LSC-CyFair Conference Center, Room 153 at 9191 Barker Cypress.

No appointment is necessary. Applicants should bring a resume and cover letter reflecting teaching experience and subject matter expertise. Refer to the Discovery College 2012 schedule to determine courses of interest.
