Construction on the Vaughn Gage Senior Life Center, the first community center of its kind in Cy-Fair, is nearing completion.

Work began on the 5,000-square-foot building off Jones Road last September, and construction should be complete in late February or early March, according to Asheva Phillips, president and founder of the Senior Citizens Bureau, the nonprofit building the center.

"It will be like a senior club where they can have a wide array of services and programs," she said.

Originally, Phillips intended for seniors to visit the community center for job or computer training, to visit the library, watch a movie or eat. Although those opportunities will still be made available, the building has been renovated to accommodate an adult daycare facility.

"The adult daycare portion allows people access who are lower income and can't afford to come on a daily basis," Phillips said. "We'll be able to feed them two hot meals and a snack, and provide them with a shower and bedroom area."

In addition, Phillips is planning to partner with Walgreens to implement a satellite pharmacy on-site to provide discount prescription cards for those eligible.

Phillips said she also hopes to encourage community members to become involved with the center.

"We're going to be doing something called 'Friends of Vaughn Gage,' like a donor wall," she said. "We'll be asking for volunteers and financial support."
