SISD trustees called for the bond election during the Feb. 5 board meeting. The bond election is coming as officials plan for significant growth in the district over the next decade.
According to a spring 2024 report by demographics firm Population and Survey Analysts, the district's student population is expected to grow from roughly 5,300 students in the 2024-25 school year to 14,000 students in the 2033-34 school year.
SISD officials previously said the bond will not result in a tax rate increase, if approved by voters.
The details
If approved, the bond would include funding for the following projects:
- Splendora High School auditorium and band hall additions, health science classroom and lab renovations, and auto body shop space and athletics annex expansions
- A new junior high school
- The first phase of a districtwide support services facility
- The first phase of a livestock facility and show arena
- Land for future school sites
- Other district improvements
SISD's last bond—a $201 million package and the largest bond in the district's history—was approved by voters in 2022. The bond funded an expansion for Splendora High School, a new junior high school planned to open in August, and replacement campuses for Greenleaf and Peach Creek elementary schools.
Additionally, SISD voters have approved four other bonds since 2002.
