Construction began in late August on pedestrian tunnels in Kingwood near new subdivision Royal Brook. The $900,000 project is expected to be completed by November.

The project is funded by Friendswood Development, who will be refunded by the Lake Houston Redevelopment Authority, a subsidiary of Kingwood Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone 10.

Construction on the northbound portion of the tunnel will close the northbound lanes on West Lake Houston between Sycamore Springs Drive and Appalachian Trail during the project.

The tunnel allow pedestrians to travel from the east to west on West Lake Houston Parkway underground without crossing the road at a busy intersection, said Houston Council Member Dave Martin said. Martin covers District E, which includes Kingwood and parts of Atascocita and Summerwood.
