Below are four items that may affect area residents this week.

1. Humble ISD to discuss finances, new trustee
The district is hosting a special meeting of its board of trustees Tuesday to review applications for Position 6 and discuss finances in the fiscal year 2017-18 budget, which was adopted in June. Position 6 became vacant after former trustee Heath Rushing resigned in May because he moved out of the district.

2. Montgomery County presents 5 percent cut to FY 2017-18 budget
In July 28, Montgomery County commissioners asked county departments to reduce budgets by 5 percent in order to accommodate revenue lost after approving a 20 percent homestead exemption on property taxes in March. The homestead exemption accounts for a difference of $15.6 million in revenue for FY 2017-18 compared to FY 2016-17, county Tax Assessor-Collector Tammy McCrae said.

At the end of the budget workshops, county officials proposed a $328.75 million budget, a 5.51 percent decrease from the $347.91 million budget for FY 2016-17. The county will host two more budget workshops in August before approving it in September.

3. Humble ISD hosts pre-K registration drive
Parents can register their 4-year-olds who live within Humble ISD boundaries for one of the district’s 13 free full-day or half-day pre-K options. Visit the district’s website to determine whether a family qualifies for the program. The district will have rolling admissions throughout the year. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Free.
