Harris County Commissioner Precinct 3's new community center in Atascocita will be named in honor of a former U.S. representative who served the local area, Precinct 3 officials announced in an Oct. 21 news release.

Career history

Judge Ted Poe has been selected as the namesake for Precinct 3’s ninth community center, according to the release. From 2005-19, Poe represented U.S. Congressional District 2, which includes the communities of Atascocita and Humble.

According to the release, Poe also served as a:
  • Harris County district judge from 1981 to 2003
  • Prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office
  • Member of the United States Air Force Reserves from 1970-76
The details

The 8,500-square-foot community center, currently being renovated from an existing building in Atascocita Park, is expected to be completed by the end of this year and open in 2026, per the release.

As previously reported, the center will feature:
  • Classrooms and large community rooms
  • A kitchen and a coffee bar
  • A possible generator so the center can be used as a cooling/warming center during extreme weather events
The center will be connected to Atascocita Park’s trail network, as previously reported. It could also be used as a supply distribution center in emergencies.

Funding the project

On Oct. 6, Harris County Commissioners Court approved an additional $935,000 in county commercial paper funding—which can be used for specific purposes, such as building community facilities—for Atascocita’s community center, according to meeting documents. The total county commercial paper funding for the project is $2.935 million as of Oct. 6.
