A $2.5 million community center is expected to open this year in Atascocita Park after Harris County commissioners approved a building purchase for the project Feb. 6.

The building purchase is expected to be completed this month and cost $1.95 million, according to Feb. 6 Commissioners Court meeting documents. Interior renovations—slated to cost $550,000—will begin after the purchase is finalized.

According to Feb. 6 meeting documents, the community center:
  • Will be connected to Atascocita Park’s trail network
  • Could eventually house a generator so the center can be used as a cooling/warming center during extreme weather events
  • Could be used as a supply distribution center in emergencies
The community center will be part of Precinct 3's network of community facilities, operating similarly to the Riley Chambers, Cactus Jack Cagle and Crosby Park community centers, according to meeting documents. Cost savings are expected for this project with the purchase of an existing facility.
