Robert Schafranek and Julio Garza will be heading to a runoff election May 24 for the Republican nomination for Congressional District 29, as neither candidate has snagged the required 50% of votes to win the primary election.

With 100% of Harris County's 375 polling precincts reporting, Schafranek garnered 39.21% of votes, or 3,212 votes, while Garza earned 31.68%, or 2,595 votes, according to the Harris County Elections Administrator website.

Schafranek did not respond to request for comment on the results of the election as of press time March 3.



Garza, an insurance agent, said March 3 he was not surprised to be heading to a runoff.

"I feel fantastic," Garza said. "It was expected, [and I'm] getting ready for the next step. That's all right now."

The winner of the May 24 runoff election will be facing Democrat incumbent Sylvia Garcia in the November general election.

Two other Republican candidates—Jaimy Blanco and Lupite Ejigu—ran in the March primary election. As of March 3, Blanco secured 2,152 votes while Ejigu earned 232 votes.

With 97% of Harris County precincts reporting as of March 2, Robert Schafranek and Julio Garza will likely be facing off in May for the Republican nomination for the Congressional District 29 seat.

With 362 of 375 polling precincts reporting, Schafranek scored 39.37% of the vote, or 3,152 votes, while Garza earned 31.70% of votes, or 2,538 votes, according to the Harris County Elections Administrator website. In the event no candidate earns at least 50% of votes, the top two vote-getters will face off in a runoff election.


Neither candidate responded to request for comment on the results of the March 1 election.

The other two candidates–Jaimy Blanco and Lulite Ejigu–won 2,092 votes and 224 votes, respectively.

Election day for the primary runoff will be May 24. The winner of the runoff will face Democrat incumbent Sylvia Garcia in the November general election.

As Harris County polling precinct vote counts continue to trickle in, Robert Schafranek and Julio Garza maintain their positions as the top two-vote getters for the 29th Congressional District Republican nomination.

With 207 of 750 voting centers reporting, Schafranek boasts 40.32% of votes counted so far, or 2,361 votes, while Garza holds 31.53%, or 1,846 votes, according to the Harris County elections administrator website. If no candidate receives 50% of the vote, the candidates with the two most votes will head to a runoff.

The other two Republican candidates, Jaimy Blanco and Lulite Ejigu, have earned 1,487 and 161 votes, respectively.

Two Republican candidates running for Congressional District 29–which stretches through Humble, Pasadena and south Houston–could be heading to a runoff based on early voting results and a small percentage of election day polls reporting as of March 1.

Robert Schafranek and Julio Garza could be facing off for the Republican candidate spot in the May 24 runoff should neither earn at least 50% of votes in the primary election. Schafranek has 41.31%, or 1,829 votes, while Julio Garza–who follows closely behind with 31.37%, or 1,389 early votes, according to the Harris County election administrator website.

Only two Republican polling locations were reporting as of 10:45 p.m. March 1, but early voting counts were included in the calculations.

Four total Republican candidates are vying for the U.S. District 29 position. Jaimy Blanco received 1,095 votes, and Lulite Ejigu earned 115.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat incumbent Sylvia Garcia. Garcia ran unopposed in the 2022 primary.
