Humble ISD officials are hosting a community input meeting May 12 to gather feedback on possible options to add more green space to the upcoming Foster Elementary replacement campus.

The details

The roughly $44 million, 122,000-square-foot campus, which will be located in close proximity to the old campus, is coming as part of a $775 million bond package approved by voters in May 2022.

According to a May 6 news release, officials are hosting the meeting in response to concerns raised by area residents that the new campus will not include as much green space as the previous campus.

“The district has taken the requests for more green space seriously,” the release reads.

The Foster Elementary replacement campus is expected to be completed by July 2026, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

A closer look

According to the release, officials reduced the amount green space currently planned for the replacement campus to comply with building regulations implemented after the original campus was built in 1971.

“New buildings are now required to have bigger detention areas to handle flooding and more parking spots so that cars are not crowding neighborhood streets,” the release reads “These new regulations result in less land for grass and open space.”

HISD officials said the district has paused work on a parking lot at the campus and is working with architects, engineers and local government officials to find ways to add more green space.

“It will take some time for these experts to determine what options are feasible within current regulations,” the release reads.
