Humble ISD trustees approved the renaming of Kingwood High School’s natatorium and swim room in honor of two long-time coaches at the campus.

During the board’s Dec. 10 meeting, trustees approved the renaming of the school’s natatorium to Lanny Landtroop Natatorium in honor of coach Lanny Landtroop and the school’s swim room to Russell Duin Suite in honor of coach Russell Duin.

A closer look

Both coaches enjoyed successful tenures during their stints at Kingwood High School. According to a Dec. 20 news release, Landtroop was named State Coach of the Year eight times throughout his career. During his time at Kingwood High School, Landtroop, who retired from the program in 2004, guided the swimming and diving program to:
  • 25 district championships
  • 20 regional championships
  • Six state championships
  • Three national titles
In 2010, Landtroop was inducted into the Texas Swimming Hall of Fame, according to the news release.


Officials noted Duin, who received the State Coach of the Year award six times in his career, led the campus’ diving and swimming program to:
  • One district championships
  • 17 regional championships
  • Five state championships
  • One national title
Duin retired from the program in 2018, officials said.
