Officials noted the school year will begin Aug. 9, 2023 and end May 30, 2024. Students will have a one-week break for Thanksgiving from Nov. 20-24, 2023, a two-week winter break from Dec. 18, 2023-Jan. 1, 2024, and a one-week break in spring from March 11-15, 2024.
Additionally, the calendar includes one-week breaks from Oct. 2-6, 2023 and from Feb. 5-9, 2024.
HISD Superintendent Elizabeth Fagen said the additional week-long breaks in October and February, which were first implemented in the 2019-20 school year, have been popular among both students and staff members.
“Many superintendents have approached me from Region 4 saying they're going to our calendar because it has become a recruitment and retention issue for them for staff,” Fagen said.

In other business, trustees also approved an order calling for an election to determine three positions on the district’s board of trustees during the Jan. 10 meeting.
The election—set to be held on May 6—will determine trustee positions 2, 6 and 7, which are currently held by Robert Scarfo, Marques Holmes and Nancy Morrison, respectively.
Scarfo, who previously served as trustee from 2008-15, and Morrison were each elected in May 2019. Holmes was appointed to the board in December 2021 following the resignation of former trustee Lori Twomey.
HISD trustees are elected to serve four-year terms.
