According to HISD Superintendent Elizabeth Fagen, the CTE exploration wheel program allows sixth grade students to experience eight different career-related modules to give them a chance to determine what path might be best for them to pursue in high school.
“The course provides students across the district with hands-on opportunities that allow them to discover their personal strengths by exploring multiple educational pathways before reaching high school,” Fagen said. “[Students] get to explore all the different career pathways in four-week segments, allowing them to see what each pathway would look like.”
District officials noted the eight modules include animal sciences, wildlife and nature; automotive and architecture; audio visual and graphic editing; computer technology, accounting and finance; criminal justice; health science; and science, technology, engineering and math coding and innovation.
Trustee Robert Scarfo touted the initiative, which was first put into place last school year.
“It may or may not seem like that huge of a deal, but I have to tell you, it’s a huge deal,” Scarfo said. “It didn’t happen by magic. It was a lot of hard work, and a lot of resources were put into getting the right folks in the right places [to give] the students the opportunities ... to really look at and explore things they may want to do.”
The overview of the CTE wheel course is coming after trustees in April approved a series of new barbering courses for 2022-23 school year.
Officials noted parents who are interested in enrolling their students into the district’s CTE wheel course can contact Di Nardo Bazile by calling 281-641-7954 or emailing [email protected].
