All New Caney ISD students will start off the 2020-21 school year virtually amid uncertainty of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to district officials. Teachers are still expected to return to campus on Aug. 3.

NCISD Superintendent Kenn Franklin said at the July 20 school board meeting that the district had decided to offer only online learning for the first few weeks of school until at least Sept. 8.

The district will release more information on remote learning programs via the district's website July 21. Online courses for students will begin Aug. 10; however, the University Interscholastic League has not delayed extracurricular activities as of July 20, Franklin said.

"We’re as anxious as anyone to have our students back in our classrooms with our teachers and our employees," he said. "Anything we can do to have our students back in front of us, we want to, but we won’t jeopardize the safety of our students or our staff in the process. We would rather err on the side of caution when it comes to the safety of our students."

The decision to delay in-person learning until at least September came at the recommendation of Montgomery County health officials, Franklin said. The Texas Education Agency also announced July 17 that districts could choose to offer online-only instruction for up to eight weeks.

Franklin said the district will continue to reevaluate potential learning options, and more information on the next reopening steps will be provided at the district's next board meeting Aug. 17.

"That Sept. 8 not a hard date, it’s just the advisement we don’t open before Sept. 8," he said. "So we will have constant reevaluation where we’re at with this and [it will] also be determined too about levels of infection and other things we have happen in the district."
