The New Caney ISD board of trustees gathered at Randall Reed Stadium on April 20 for its monthly school board meeting.

Sitting at individual tables, trustees and district officials discussed the food distribution schedule through May 22 and continued construction on district facilities.

Trustees also unanimously approved several agenda items, including a low attendance waiver and a school closure waiver.

The district has been approved giving students free meals through May 22, as the district is staying closed through the end of the 2019-20 school year due to the coronavirus. However, the district may also end up offering food through the entire summer, said Brandy Chelette, executive director of business and financial services.

District officials are considering shifting the distribution schedule from Mon.-Fri. to Mon.-Thu. to allow employees working daily to pass out meals to have a weekday off, Chelette said. Students would still get all their meals, but Friday meals would be given to the students on Thursday along with that day's meals.

District officials also provided updates on construction projects. Construction on the Comprehensive High School No. 3 from the district's 2018 bond referendum is continuing as scheduled, with the project having gone to bid April 7, Deputy Superintendent Matt Calvert said.

All bids came in under the estimated $111 million budget, and the district will pursue negotiations with Gamma Construction Company to get a final price for the campus, Calvert said. The high school is located at 180 Sorters McClellan Road, Kingwood, and it will open in August 2022.

Construction on the expansion of Woodridge Forest Middle School, which is set to open in August, is coming down to the finishing touches, Calvert said. Additionally, the concrete slab for the Keefer Crossing Middle School replacement is almost laid, he said. The $52 million school is set to open August 2021.
